Comedian Russell Brand has publicly criticised the new romantic relationship between his ex-wife, pop star Katy Perry, and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Public Outburst at Political Event
The 50-year-old actor and comedian made his comments while speaking on stage at a Turning Point USA event in Phoenix on Thursday, December 18. Addressing the crowd, Brand brought up his former spouse and the politician.
"Look, Katy Perry, I was married to her. I love her still, and I’m glad that her mom’s in the room to hear me say this, but look. I was okay with Orlando Bloom, but Justin Trudeau? Come on, man! Don’t put me in a category with that guy! That globalist stooge," Brand declared during his speech.
A History of High-Profile Relationships
Russell Brand and Katy Perry were married from 2010 until their divorce in 2012, which Brand initiated. Following their split, Perry began a relationship with actor Orlando Bloom in 2016 after meeting at a Golden Globes afterparty.
The singer and Bloom got engaged in 2019 and share a daughter, Daisy Dove Bloom, born in August 2020. However, in June 2025, the couple called off their engagement after nine years together.
Rumours of a romance between Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau began circulating in July 2025 after they were spotted on a date in Montreal, Canada. The pair then made their first official public appearance as a couple in October 2025 at a cabaret show in Paris to celebrate Perry's birthday.
Controversy Surrounding Brand's Legal Troubles
This public commentary comes amid serious legal challenges for Russell Brand. Earlier this year, he was charged with five counts, including assault and rape, stemming from allegations made by four women.
The initial accusations surfaced in September 2023 following a joint investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4's Dispatches. Five women came forward with allegations of incidents occurring between 1999 and 2005. One woman alleged she was raped by Brand in southern England in 1999.
Russell Brand has consistently denied all allegations, stating he "absolutely refutes" the claims made against him.
