Barcelona have officially announced the signing of England international Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United, in a transfer that could reach €80 million ($93 million). The deal was finalized on Friday, May 29, marking a significant addition to the Catalan club's attacking lineup.
Contract Details
The 25-year-old left winger has committed to a five-year contract with Barcelona, which will keep him at the Camp Nou until June 30, 2031. Gordon arrives after a stellar season with Newcastle, where he emerged as the club's top scorer with 17 goals, including an impressive 10 goals in the Champions League.
Impact on Barcelona's Attack
Gordon's arrival is part of a broader reshaping of Barcelona's forward line. The club is set to lose veteran Polish striker Robert Lewandowski at the end of his contract, and Marcus Rashford's loan spell from Manchester United is also concluding. The newly crowned La Liga champions have gained more financial flexibility under the league's strict financial fair play regulations, aided by the partially rebuilt and reopened Camp Nou stadium, as well as consecutive years of reduced spending.
The departure of Lewandowski's wages and the clearance of Rashford's loan from the books have created significant financial room for further moves. Barcelona's hierarchy is reportedly keen to strengthen further, with Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez being linked to the club, and a potential permanent move for Rashford still not ruled out.
Potential Squad Adjustments
Further changes to the squad could see players like Roony Bardghji, Ansu Fati, and Marc-Andre ter Stegen leaving the club as Barcelona continues to adjust its roster.
Newcastle's Perspective
For Newcastle, Gordon's departure represents the second-largest sale in the club's history, trailing only Alexander Isak's £125 million ($168 million) move to Liverpool last summer. The Premier League side is already scouting for replacements, with Real Betis winger Ez Abde high on their radar.
Financial Windfall for Everton
Everton is set to benefit financially from this transfer. Having sold Gordon to Newcastle for £45 million in 2023, the Merseyside club secured a 15% sell-on clause on any profits generated from his departure from St James's Park.
