Nollywood Filmmaker Bolaji Ogunmola Issues Public Apology Over Controversial Film Scene
Nollywood filmmaker and actress Bolaji Ogunmola has issued a formal public apology following significant backlash over a controversial scene in one of her films that viewers allege reinforces harmful stereotypes about Yoruba women. The apology was shared via her official X (formerly Twitter) account, where Ogunmola directly addressed the criticism that has dominated social media discussions in recent days.
Overwhelming Backlash and Personal Threats
In her detailed statement, Ogunmola described the past three days as "extremely disturbing" due to the intense reaction to the viral clip. She revealed receiving numerous insults and direct threats targeting both her personal safety and professional livelihood. Specific threats included messages aimed at shutting down her YouTube channel and others wishing harm upon her family members.
"First of all, I want to apologise to well-respected Yoruba people for this error," Ogunmola wrote, acknowledging the legitimate offense caused by the controversial content. She emphasized that the reaction has been overwhelming and necessitated this public response.
Clarifying Intentions and Production Circumstances
Despite the severe backlash, Ogunmola maintained that the film was never created with the intention of demeaning any ethnic group. She explained that the project was produced approximately three years ago as a comedy centered around cultural differences between two tribes, with a storyline that ultimately resolves in themes of love and unity.
"We never intended... to make a film to stereotype any tribe," she stated clearly. According to Ogunmola, the creative goal was to demonstrate how people from diverse backgrounds can coexist harmoniously, not to promote harmful stereotypes.
Limited Creative Control and Production Role
Ogunmola provided important context about her involvement in the production, noting that while she served as both actor and producer, she did not exercise full creative control over every scene. She stressed that on-set decisions are primarily determined by the director, which limited her ability to alter specific elements during filming.
Additionally, she clarified that she did not write the script and that the controversial line was not deliberately included to insult or disrespect Yoruba people. Ogunmola explained that at the time of production, the creative team did not fully comprehend how such dialogue could be perceived by audiences.
Reaffirming Cultural Identity and Taking Responsibility
Reaffirming her personal identity, Ogunmola described herself as a proud Yoruba woman who would never knowingly support content that undermines her own people. She emphasized her cultural connection to the community she allegedly offended through the film's content.
Nevertheless, Ogunmola concluded by taking full responsibility as the film's producer and offering a second, more comprehensive apology to all those offended. She assured that the concerns raised by viewers have been duly noted and will inform her future creative decisions.
Origin of the Controversy
The backlash originated after a specific clip from the film went viral across multiple social media platforms. In the controversial scene, actor I.K Ogbona portrays a character who during an exchange tells the female character (played by Bolaji Ogunmola) "Yoruba girl, you people are very dirty."
This remark drew immediate criticism from numerous social media users who accused Ogunmola of amplifying a stereotype that Yoruba women have actively pushed back against for years. The viral nature of the clip amplified the controversy significantly.
Ogunmola's Professional Background
Bolaji Ogunmola has established a strong reputation within Nollywood as both a talented actress and successful producer. Her filmography spans multiple genres including romance, family dramas, and comedy productions.
Notably, she co-produced "Gingerrr" which achieved remarkable commercial success by grossing over ₦500 million at the box office. The film has also earned nine nominations at the upcoming 2026 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, highlighting Ogunmola's significant contributions to the Nigerian film industry.
