In a dramatic move aimed at preserving national stability, Gabon's media regulatory authority has announced the immediate and indefinite suspension of all social media platforms across the country. The High Authority for Communication made this critical announcement through a televised statement, declaring that the suspension would remain in effect "until further notice." This decision represents one of the most significant digital restrictions implemented in the Central African nation in recent years.
Regulator Cites Multiple Concerns Over Online Content
Spokesman Jean-Claude Mendome explained the regulator's position in detail, stating that the suspension followed mounting concerns about "inappropriate, defamatory, hateful, and insulting content" circulating widely on various social media platforms. According to Mendome, such material has been systematically undermining "human dignity, public morality, the honour of citizens, social cohesion, the stability of the Republic's institutions, and national security."
The regulator identified several specific issues that contributed to this decision, including the widespread dissemination of false information, increasing incidents of cyberbullying, and unauthorized disclosure of personal data. These actions, according to the High Authority for Communication, create conditions that could "generate social conflict, destabilise the institutions of the Republic, and seriously jeopardise national unity, democratic progress, and achievements."
