Delta Health Workers Conduct Free Surgeries to Mark World Kidney Day

In a significant move to commemorate this year's World Kidney Day, the Progressive Health Forum (PHF), a coalition of healthcare professionals in Delta State, has launched a statewide health initiative. Over the weekend, the group began providing free Arteriovenous (AV) Fistula surgeries for patients suffering from chronic kidney disease across the state's three senatorial districts.

This exercise is designed to revolutionise hemodialysis management and alleviate the financial strain on affected individuals. Organisers emphasised that the programme prioritises AV fistula, recognised globally as the gold standard for vascular access. It serves as a safer and more durable alternative to temporary catheters, which are often associated with complications and high infection rates.

Strategic Contribution to Healthcare System

Dr Ogbo James, Chairman of the Progressive Health Forum, described the initiative as a strategic contribution by healthcare professionals aimed at strengthening Delta State's health system. The Progressive Health Workers Forum is a multi-disciplinary coalition of healthcare professionals dedicated to nation-building, he stated. Our mission is to work closely with both the federal and Delta State governments to ensure that quality healthcare is not a luxury, but a standard for all Nigerians.

Dr James expressed gratitude to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his efforts in modernising medical infrastructure and acknowledged the Commissioner for Health, Dr Joseph Onojaeme, for their support.

Government Investments Enhance Medical Capacity

Prof. Emmanuel Akpo, Chief Medical Director of the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH) in Oghara, highlighted the impact of government investments in healthcare. He noted an unprecedented influx of high-end diagnostic tools, which has transformed medical facilities in the state. We have seen a remarkable transformation in our facilities, Akpo said. From advanced CT scanners and MRI systems to new dialysis units and ventilators, the tools required for world-class medicine are now available. This initiative by the PHF builds on this foundation of improved medical capacity.

The free surgery programme is part of broader efforts to improve healthcare access and outcomes in Delta State, particularly for those battling chronic conditions like kidney disease. By focusing on AV fistula procedures, the PHF aims to provide long-term solutions that enhance patient safety and reduce healthcare costs.
