A Hertfordshire father's attempt to save money on dental care has resulted in a devastating outcome, leaving him without teeth and in constant pain after a botched procedure in Turkey. Jon Denton, from Letchworth Garden City, initially sought dental implants abroad due to unaffordable costs in the UK, but his experience highlights the significant risks associated with medical tourism.
From Accident to Dental Desperation
Jon Denton's dental issues began after a serious motorbike accident in 2020. During his recovery, front teeth had to be removed to accommodate a breathing tube, and metal fixations in his jaw caused his remaining teeth to decay and crumble. This left him struggling to eat, often having to cut food into small pieces like a child. A local dentist quoted him £30,000 for treatment, a sum he could not afford, prompting him to explore cheaper options overseas.
The Turkish Dental Procedure That Went Wrong
In January, Jon flew to Turkey for a dental implant procedure costing £3,500, equivalent to approximately N6 million, to fit 14 implants. He described the process as rushed, noting that he was in the dental chair within an hour of paying and signing paperwork. After the surgery, he experienced excruciating pain, rating it nine out of ten once painkillers wore off. To make matters worse, he was charged an additional £800 upon arrival and later £300 for sedation.
Implant Failure and Total Tooth Loss
Within days of returning home to the UK, Jon's bottom teeth fell out unexpectedly while he was laughing on the sofa. In March, he returned to Turkey for a check-up, where he claims the dentist, under sedation, removed all his implants instead of fixing them. He woke up to find himself completely toothless, unable to eat even soft foods like cake. Jon expressed deep regret, stating, "It's the worst thing I've ever been through, I wish I could turn back time."
Financial and Emotional Fallout
The clinic offered Jon dentures or a partial refund of £2,700, which he accepted. However, the emotional and financial impact has been severe. He has started a GoFundMe page, raising over £600 so far to repair his smile, fearing that the situation could ruin his relationship and affect his work and income. Jon admitted, "I wake up in a foul mood everyday and I don't want to go to work which is affecting my bills and income."
