Health Workers Alert Jigawa Community to Lassa Fever and Meningitis Outbreak

Health specialists in Jigawa State have taken a renewed and urgent fight against a recent outbreak of Lassa fever and meningitis, following a reported death in Babura Local Government Area. The outbreak has left health workers exposed and prompted fresh community-to-community campaigns to combat the scourge of these deadly diseases.

Sensitization Drive Across Multiple Communities

It was learned that the sensitization drive, organized by the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre in Jigawa State and the National Orientation Agency with support from UNICEF, has covered several communities. These include Babura, Guri, Malam-Madori, and Jigawar Dan Ali in Jigawa State. Health personnel who spoke with the Guardian reminded that Nigeria has persistently battled rising cases of Lassa fever and diphtheria across several states, with health authorities warning rural communities to stay alert and vigilant.

Urgent Response and Official Statements

Speaking during the flagging off of the sensitization campaign held at the Babura District Head’s Palace in Babura LGA, the Jigawa State Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer, Sani Ibrahim, emphasized the urgency of the exercise. He stated, "The sensitization became necessary following a reported outbreak of Lassa fever in Babura which resulted in the death of one person." This underscores the critical need for immediate action to prevent further spread and casualties.
