APC Takes Crucial Step as Party Welcomes Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf
In a significant political development, the All Progressives Congress (APC) chapter in Kano State has officially welcomed Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf into the ruling party. This move comes just days after Governor Yusuf announced his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), marking a pivotal shift in the state's political landscape.
Governor Yusuf's Resignation and APC's Open Arms
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who is widely expected to join the APC, has formally stepped down from the NNPP. His departure is accompanied by a substantial political entourage, including 73 elected officials such as State Assembly members and local government chairmen. This mass exodus underscores the governor's influence and the potential realignment of political forces in Kano State.
The APC State Secretary, Ibrahim Zakari Sarina, expressed optimism about Governor Yusuf's impending alignment with the party. In statements reported by Daily Trust, Sarina emphasized that the APC's doors are fully open to the governor and his supporters. "He is welcome. That is all we are going to say for now. Even though he didn’t specifically declare for APC, hopefully, he will soon come to APC. Our doors are open, and we welcome him," Sarina stated, describing the development as a welcome boost for the APC.
Reserved Registration and Political Implications
In anticipation of Governor Yusuf's defection, the APC has taken the symbolic step of reserving registration number 001 for him. Sarina confirmed that the party has initiated e-registration processes and allocated this prestigious number at the governor's Chiranci-Diso ward. "We have started e-registration and have reserved the 001 registration number for the governor. Yes, it is true. We reserved that number for him at his Chiranci-Diso ward," he explained.
This gesture highlights the APC's readiness to accommodate not only Governor Yusuf but also his cabinet members, supporters, and political associates. The move is seen as a strategic effort to strengthen the party's position in Kano State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
NNPP Internal Conflict and Broader Context
The governor's defection occurs amidst deepening internal conflicts within the NNPP. Factional chairman Mas’ud Eljibril had previously demanded Governor Yusuf's formal resignation before defecting to the APC, with court rulings reportedly affirming Eljibril's faction as the legitimate NNPP in Nigeria. These clashes over leadership positions have intensified as the 2027 elections approach.
Adding to the political drama, the NNPP flag was removed from the Kano State Government House on Friday, January 23, 2026, as captured in a video sighted by Legit.ng. This symbolic act further signals Governor Yusuf's break from his former party and his anticipated alignment with the APC.
Governor Yusuf, a 63-year-old protégé of NNPP leader Rabiu Kwankwaso, is now poised to join the ruling APC in what is being described as a major political realignment. This development could reshape electoral dynamics in Kano State and influence national politics as Nigeria looks toward the 2027 polls.
