A massive philanthropic gesture is set to brighten the festive season for thousands in Delta State, as former Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Friday Osanebi, has committed a staggering One Billion Naira (₦1,000,000,000) to support residents during the Christmas period.
Compassionate Gesture Amid Economic Hardship
The announcement was made public in Asaba on Friday, December 5, 2025, by Comrade Mathias Ogochukwu Osanebi, the lawmaker's younger brother. He stated that the unprecedented donation was motivated by a sincere desire to "restore joy, hope and comfort" to families across the state who are grappling with the severe economic downturn.
Mathias Osanebi described his brother as a leader whose actions are driven by genuine love for the people, rather than political calculations. "He is a compassionate leader whose generosity is rooted in love for the people, and not political ambition," he told journalists.
Details of the Billion-Naira Christmas Intervention
The comprehensive ₦1 billion Christmas intervention package is designed to ensure families can celebrate with dignity. The initiative includes a wide array of essential items and support:
- Trailer-loads of rice and other food staples
- Cows and goats for festive meals
- Groundnut oil and tinned tomatoes
- Direct cash gifts to beneficiaries
Furthermore, the former Deputy Speaker is continuing his annual tradition of gifting cars to deserving youths, widows, community influencers, and loyal supporters. To guarantee a transparent and fair distribution process, Friday Osanebi has mandated the formation of a credible and responsible team to oversee the exercise.
Mathias Osanebi emphasised the critical timing of the support. "At a time when Nigerians are facing severe challenges, my brother believes an act of kindness, no matter the size, can restore happiness," he said. He noted that the donation directly addresses the soaring costs of food, energy, and transportation, offering timely relief to countless households.
Police Apprehend Suspected Serial Killer in Separate Incident
In a related security update from Delta State, the Police Command has announced the arrest of a suspected serial killer and prison escapee, Michael Ezenwai. The suspect was apprehended by the Agbor Police Division on October 24, 2025, while allegedly attempting to sell a stolen phone.
Investigations revealed the phone belonged to a woman who was later found dead in her apartment. During interrogation, Ezenwai confessed to murdering her during a robbery at her residence on October 23, 2025. The suspect has also been linked to other violent crimes, including a 2020 rape and murder case of a university student.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed that operatives acted swiftly on a distress call. The suspect initially claimed the phone was brought from Libya, but later confessed to the crime.
The dual developments in Delta State highlight a week of significant events, juxtaposing large-scale humanitarian aid against successful police work to address serious violent crime.
