Presidency Denies Reports of Ministerial Sackings, Confirms Resignations
The Presidency has issued a firm denial regarding media reports that claimed former Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and former Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, were dismissed by President Bola Tinubu. In a statement released on the evening of April 22, presidential media aide Bayo Onanuga clarified that both ministers resigned voluntarily, countering widespread public speculation.
Health Grounds and Personal Reasons Cited for Departures
According to Onanuga, Wale Edun submitted his resignation on health grounds, coinciding with his 70th birthday on Monday. Edun has reportedly been battling recent ill health, making his resignation a fitting decision on this milestone. In his resignation letter, Edun expressed gratitude to President Tinubu, stating, "It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve your administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda. Under your leadership, Nigeria has emerged stronger, more resilient and more internationally respected. I wish you and the administration every success in the future."
On Tuesday, before the official announcement of his departure by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Edun paid a valedictory visit to the President at the Villa. The meeting lasted an hour, after which Edun left to focus on his private business ventures.
Dangiwa's Resignation and Presidential Appreciation
Similarly, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa tendered his resignation, thanking the President for the opportunity to serve in the Federal Executive Council. The Presidency emphasized that Dangiwa was not sacked but chose to step down for personal reasons.
President Tinubu has expressed deep appreciation for both Edun and Dangiwa, acknowledging their dedicated service and significant contributions to the administration's economic reform program. The President wished them continued success in their future endeavors, highlighting their roles in advancing Nigeria's fiscal policies.
Transition to New Leadership and Senate Confirmations
With these resignations, the administration is moving forward with new appointments. President Tinubu has urged the new Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, to consolidate ongoing reforms and advance the administration's fiscal and economic objectives with renewed focus, discipline, and innovation.
Additionally, the President will shortly send the ministerial nominee for housing, Muttaqha Rabe Darma, who, like Dangiwa, hails from Katsina State, to the Senate for confirmation. This step ensures continuity in the housing and urban development sector while maintaining regional representation.
