Presidency Provides Official Update on Ministerial Resignations
The Presidency has officially confirmed the resignations of two key ministers from the Federal Executive Council, providing clarity on the circumstances surrounding their departures. This development marks a significant shift in President Bola Tinubu's cabinet as the administration continues its economic reform agenda.
Wale Edun Steps Down Citing Health Reasons
Wale Edun, the former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, has formally resigned from his position. According to presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, who shared the update on social media platform X on April 22, Edun voluntarily stepped down due to health considerations and was not dismissed from office.
Edun submitted his resignation letter on Monday, which coincided with his 70th birthday. In his resignation correspondence, he expressed profound gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve. "It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve your administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda," Edun wrote. "Under your leadership, Nigeria has emerged stronger, more resilient and more internationally respected. I wish you and the administration every success in the future."
Prior to the formal announcement of his departure, Edun paid a valedictory visit to President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa. The meeting lasted approximately one hour, after which Edun departed to focus on his private business interests.
Housing Minister Ahmed Musa Dangiwa Also Resigns
In a parallel development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, has also resigned from his cabinet position. Dangiwa expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve in the Federal Executive Council.
Dangiwa brings extensive experience to his previous role, having served as Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria from 2015 to 2022. He also previously held the position of Secretary to the Katsina State Government before his appointment as Housing Minister in August 2023.
President Tinubu Expresses Appreciation for Service
President Bola Tinubu has publicly acknowledged and appreciated the dedicated service and contributions of both ministers to Nigeria's economic reform programme. The President extended his best wishes for their future endeavours, recognizing their roles in advancing the administration's policy objectives.
New Appointments Announced to Continue Reforms
To ensure continuity in governance and policy implementation, President Tinubu has announced new appointments to fill the vacant ministerial positions.
Taiwo Oyedele has been appointed as the new Minister of Finance, with the President urging him to consolidate ongoing economic reforms and advance fiscal objectives with discipline and innovation.
For the Housing Ministry, President Tinubu will shortly forward the nomination of Muttaqha Rabe Darma, also from Katsina State, to the Senate for confirmation as the new minister.
Wale Edun's Distinguished Career Highlights
Edun's resignation concludes a distinguished career spanning decades in finance and public service. His professional journey includes:
- Serving as Lagos State Commissioner for Finance between 1999 and 2004 under then-Governor Bola Tinubu
- Working at Chase Merchant Bank (later Continental) in Lagos from 1980 to 1986
- Joining the World Bank in 1986 through the Young Professionals programme, where he contributed to economic packages for Latin America and the Caribbean
- Co-founding Investment Banking & Trust Company Limited (now Stanbic IBTC) in 1989
- Establishing Denham Management Limited in 1994, which evolved into Chapelhill Denham Group, where he served as chairman until 2021
