SDP's Gabam Urges Tinubu: Tackle Youth Unemployment Crisis Now
Gabam to Tinubu: Youth Unemployment is Alarming

The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, has issued a stark warning to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the level of youth unemployment in Nigeria as alarming. In his New Year message for 2026, Gabam pressed the federal and state governments to treat job creation and poverty reduction as matters of utmost urgency.

A Call for Collective Action and National Unity

In the message titled “Building a Better Nigeria: The 2026 Vision for Collective Action,” Gabam appealed to all Nigerians to embrace unity and shared responsibility. He argued that this is the only way to confront the nation's deep-seated security, economic, and social challenges. The SDP leader pointed out that Nigeria concluded the year 2025 under the heavy burden of widespread insecurity, severe economic hardship, and a failing education system.

Gabam stressed that these interconnected problems demand immediate and well-coordinated action from both the government and ordinary citizens. He emphasized that national unity is the non-negotiable foundation for any sustainable development, adding that Nigeria’s rich diversity should be leveraged as a powerful strength instead of being a source of division.

“Our diversity must unite us, not divide us,” Gabam stated. “Collective action is essential to overcoming our current difficulties and building a future defined by hope, opportunity and shared prosperity.”

Key Pillars for a Better Nigeria: Security, Education, Economy

Gabam outlined specific areas where urgent intervention is needed. On the critical issue of security, he urged the Federal Government to make the safety of citizens its top priority by decisively addressing the root causes of violence and instability. He advocated for stronger collaboration between communities, civil society organisations, and security agencies. Citizens were also encouraged to play their part by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activities promptly.

Turning to education, the SDP chairman described it as the cornerstone of national development. He called for a significant increase in government investment in schools, teachers, and students. Gabam pushed for policies that foster innovation, critical thinking, and practical skills acquisition. He believes that improved infrastructure, better learning environments, and expanded scholarship programmes are vital to enhancing educational outcomes. This, in turn, would empower young Nigerians to contribute meaningfully to the nation's growth.

On the economy, Gabam called for policies specifically designed to stimulate growth, create sustainable jobs, and reduce poverty. He identified economic diversification, support for entrepreneurship, and encouragement of innovation as the clear pathways to inclusive and long-term development. He insisted that all economic reforms must prioritise the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.

Demanding Accountability and a Sovereign Foreign Policy

The political leader further charged citizens to actively demand accountability and transparency from their political leaders. He asserted that governance must be firmly anchored on integrity, clear vision, and genuine responsiveness to the needs of the people.

“Leaders must be held responsible for delivering tangible results that strengthen democracy and improve living standards,” Gabam declared.

On the international front, he advised President Tinubu to pursue a foreign policy of diplomacy that strengthens Nigeria's bilateral relations while firmly safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and national interests. He noted that any international partnerships entered into must deliver concrete and measurable benefits to Nigerian citizens.

Concluding his message, Gabam said, “As we usher in 2026, let us commit to building a better Nigeria.” He urged President Tinubu to lead the nation with “vision and determination” and called on all Nigerians to work together for a peaceful, secure, and prosperous nation.
