DSS Nabs Notorious Impersonator Targeting Peace Mass Transit Customers
Security operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) have apprehended a suspected fraudster who allegedly impersonated Peace Mass Transit (PMT) staff to defraud customers across Nigeria. The transport company confirmed the arrest of Cletus Onwe from Ebonyi State, who had been operating an elaborate scam targeting unsuspecting passengers.
Modus Operandi of the Scam
According to PMT management, the suspect's method involved infiltrating various PMT depots nationwide, taking photographs of himself in general areas, and posting these images online to convince victims of his legitimacy as a company employee. Onwe allegedly received and diverted numerous parcels meant for dispatch to different destinations after collecting substantial sums of money from customers.
The company's General Manager, Nnamdi Asadu, revealed that security personnel had been discreetly monitoring Onwe following multiple customer complaints about missing parcels. The suspect was eventually tracked and arrested in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on November 20, 2025.
Impact on Company and Customers
While the exact duration of Onwe's criminal activities and the total amount stolen remain undetermined, preliminary estimates suggest victims lost millions of naira in both cash and valuables. Asadu expressed deep regret over the "incalculable damage" caused to PMT's reputation through the suspect's criminal enterprise.
"Many of our customers had lost money and valuables, having fallen prey to the antics of this unrepentant, unscrupulous person," the General Manager lamented during his statement.
PMT officials emphasized that while they maintain confidence in their staff and systems, the company took immediate action upon receiving complaints about an unauthorized individual infiltrating their operations. The successful arrest represents a significant relief for the transport company as it works to restore customer trust.
Asadu assured valued customers that PMT would take all necessary measures to protect the company's name and the integrity it has diligently maintained since inception. Investigations continue to determine whether Onwe acted alone or as part of a larger criminal network.
