Nigerian Man Found Guilty of Murder in UK After Drug-Fueled Rampage
A 24-year-old Nigerian man has been convicted of the murder of a 56-year-old woman in the United Kingdom, following a violent and random attack that occurred after he crashed his car while under the influence of cannabis. The tragic incident unfolded in Leicester, highlighting severe consequences of drug-impaired driving and violent crime.
Details of the Fatal Attack and Conviction
Chukwuemeka Michael Ahanonu, residing on Dover Street in Leicester, was found guilty by a jury at Leicester Crown Court on Monday, March 23, 2026, for the murder of Nila Patel. The attack took place during the late afternoon of Tuesday, June 24, 2025, on Infirmary Road in Leicester. Just minutes before the assault, Ahanonu had been driving erratically and dangerously through the city centre, swerving across lanes, running traffic lights, and nearly hitting pedestrians and a bus stop where people were waiting.
After crashing his car in the area, Ahanonu violently attacked Patel, who had just disembarked from a bus and was walking home. Security officers from the nearby Leicester Royal Infirmary rushed to the scene and managed to restrain him until police arrived. Medical staff from the hospital provided emergency support to Patel, who suffered a fractured skull and a brain injury. She was taken to the hospital but sadly died two days later on Thursday, June 26, 2025.
Investigation and Additional Charges
Following the victim's death, Ahanonu was re-arrested on suspicion of murder, with the investigation led by the East Midlands Special Operations Unit Major Incident Team. During the trial, Ahanonu pleaded guilty to several other charges, including dangerous driving, possession with intent to supply class B drugs—specifically dealer bags of cannabis worth over £3,000 found in a rucksack in his car—and assault of an emergency worker after he bit a female officer following his arrest.
He was found not guilty of a common assault charge related to an incident reported in London earlier on the same day involving a woman known to him. Enquiries revealed that Ahanonu had driven from London to his Leicester address on the morning of June 24, with CCTV footage showing him leaving his flat at 5:28 PM that afternoon before his dangerous driving spree. At 5:31 PM, he was recorded undertaking a vehicle in Welford Place and colliding with a kerb outside a bus stop on Welford Road, where members of the public were waiting.
Victim Remembered and Sentencing
Nila Patel was described by her family as a "beautiful, vibrant soul" and "one of the most kind-hearted people you could ever meet," emphasizing the profound loss felt by her loved ones. Ahanonu has been remanded into custody and is due to be sentenced today, Tuesday, March 24, 2026, with the case underscoring the devastating impact of drug-related violence on communities.
