Ogun Police Transfer Rescued Foreign Nationals to NIS for Family Reunification
In a significant development, the police in Ogun State have officially handed over eight rescued foreign nationals to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) for thorough profiling and immediate reunification with their families. This action follows a successful operation that led to the arrest of two suspects involved in a fraudulent scheme targeting vulnerable individuals.
Arrest and Rescue Operation Details
The operation unfolded when police stormed a hideout in the Owode-Egba area, resulting in the rescue of nine foreign nationals. Among those rescued was a 40-year-old Ghanaian national, Maclaud Owusu. The two suspects apprehended in connection with the case have been identified as Stephen Kwame and Abubakar Sulaimon, both males. According to police reports, these suspects specialized in defrauding their victims by contacting their families and relatives via mobile phones to demand money. They operated under the false pretence of facilitating travel to Europe for better opportunities, exploiting the hopes of those seeking a greener pasture.
Progress in Reunification Efforts
Police authorities have confirmed that the principal victim, Maclaud Owusu, has already been successfully reunited with his family. Efforts are currently ongoing to ensure that the remaining eight rescued individuals are also reconnected with their respective families as swiftly as possible. To facilitate this process, the police have transferred these victims to the NIS, which will handle the necessary administrative and profiling procedures to ensure safe and orderly reunification.
Official Statement and Commitment to Justice
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, the handover was described as a decisive action that highlights the commitment of the Ogun State Police Command to intelligence-led policing and effective inter-agency collaboration. Babaseyi emphasized that this move underscores the unwavering resolve of the Command to protect victims, dismantle criminal networks, and ensure that justice is served decisively. The statement reinforced the importance of synergy between law enforcement agencies in addressing such cases and safeguarding the rights and welfare of all individuals involved.
This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts by Nigerian authorities to combat human trafficking and fraud, particularly schemes that prey on the aspirations of foreign nationals. The collaboration between the police and the NIS is expected to enhance the efficiency of such operations and provide a framework for future interventions aimed at protecting vulnerable populations and upholding the rule of law.
