The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Olatunji Disu, has directed Commissioners of Police (CPs) to intensify enforcement operations against unregistered vehicles and those with concealed registration numbers across Nigeria. The order was issued on Tuesday in Abuja during a conference with Strategic Police Managers, which includes officers from the rank of CPs.
Unlawful and Irresponsible Practice
Mr. Disu described the act of driving without registration numbers or with deliberately obscured plates as unlawful, irresponsible, and unacceptable. He emphasized that such practices pose significant threats to public safety and national security.
Growing Trend
The I-G noted a disturbing increase in vehicles without proper identification, often used by criminals to evade detection. He stated that the Nigerian Police Force will no longer tolerate such impunity.
Legal Consequences
Any vehicle found without number plates or with tampered registration numbers will be stopped, grounded, and subjected to legal proceedings. Mr. Disu stressed that vehicle registration is not merely administrative but crucial for crime prevention and intelligence gathering.
Enforcement Directive
All CPs, tactical commanders, and heads of formations are directed to immediately enforce these measures without preferential treatment or selective enforcement. Law-abiding citizens are encouraged to ensure their vehicles comply with registration regulations.
