Man arrested in Edo for alleged abduction of 4-year-old

A 21-year-old man is now in police custody after being accused of abducting a four-year-old boy in Benin City, Edo State. The swift intervention of vigilant citizens and security operatives led to the child's rescue.

Vigilant Bus Driver, Passenger Raise Alarm

The incident, which sent shockwaves through the Ikpoba Hill area, occurred on January 4, 2026. According to officials, a woman had briefly stepped out with her young son when the child suddenly vanished from her sight.

The suspect, identified as ThankGod Destiny, allegedly seized the boy and hurriedly boarded a commercial bus heading towards King's Square. However, his plan began to unravel when the bus driver became suspicious.

"The driver noticed a great difference in resemblance between the little boy and the man," said Deputy Corps Commander, Operations, of the Edo State Security Corps (ESSC), Richard Balogun.

Contradictory Stories Lead to Arrest

When questioned by the driver, Destiny claimed the child was ill and he was taking him to the hospital. Later, a female passenger on the bus also inquired about their destination. This time, the suspect changed his story, saying he was going to buy shoes for the boy.

The conflicting explanations immediately raised red flags. The driver and the passenger raised an alarm, which attracted ESSC personnel who were on patrol in the vicinity.

The security operatives swiftly moved in, apprehending the suspect and rescuing the kidnapped boy, who was found unharmed. The timely action prevented a potential tragedy.

Suspect Handed Over to Police, Child Reunited with Family

Following the arrest at the scene, the ESSC has handed over ThankGod Destiny to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and subsequent prosecution. The case highlights the collaborative efforts between community vigilance and formal security agencies.

Authorities confirmed that the rescued four-year-old victim has been successfully reunited with his relieved family.

Deputy Commander Balogun, who disclosed the details to journalists in Benin on Thursday, January 8, 2026, assured the public that the Corps remains committed to its duty. He stated that the ESSC would continue to intensify efforts to rid Edo State of criminal elements and protect all residents.

This event serves as a crucial reminder for parents and guardians to maintain extra vigilance, especially in crowded public spaces. It also underscores the powerful role citizens can play in community safety by being observant and courageous enough to speak up.
