The Anambra State Police Command has made a grim discovery in its investigation into the kidnapping of three Cameroonian women, recovering two decomposing bodies from a river in the state.
River Recovery Operation
Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed in a statement dated Saturday, November 29, 2025, that the decomposing bodies were recovered from Omambala River in Anambra West Local Government Area. The recovery operation took place on the evening of November 28, 2025, involving police operatives from the Rapid Response Squad in Awkuzu working alongside professional river divers and local volunteers.
The police had been investigating the disappearance of three Cameroonian women who had been missing for some time. The intensive search along the river led to the tragic discovery of two female bodies in advanced decomposition, believed to be victims of the kidnapping incident.
Suspects and Identification
Prior to the discovery, the police command had made significant progress in the investigation with the arrest of two suspects: Nonso Augustine Akpeh, 37, and Kingsley Akpeh, 44. Both suspects have been providing vital information to investigators, while a third suspect identified as Uchenna Nicholas Mmadu remains at large.
Following the recovery, police operatives immediately contacted the family of the kidnapped victims. The family member positively identified the recovered bodies as his wife, Mrs. Bognou Alice, and his niece, Miss Sandra. Both bodies have been deposited in a mortuary for further examination and necessary investigative procedures.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered intensified search efforts to locate and recover the remaining missing victim. The Commissioner extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and friends while reassuring the public of the Command's commitment to delivering justice.
CP Orutugu has directed all units involved to strengthen operational activities aimed at apprehending the third suspect, Uchenna Nicholas Mmadu, who remains on the run. The police emphasized their determination to ensure the fleeing suspect faces the full weight of the law once captured.
