A consultant physician based in the United Kingdom has publicly voiced his deep concern for the safety of a man still held captive by kidnappers, amid the ongoing controversy surrounding activist Harrison Gwamnishu.
Doctor's Public Plea on Social Media
Obinna Aligwekwe, the UK-based doctor, took to Facebook on December 7, 2025, to share his worries. His post came after activist Harrison Gwamnishu was remanded by the Edo State Police Command. Gwamnishu was accused of tampering with ransom money intended for the release of kidnapped Nigerians.
In his heartfelt post, Dr. Aligwekwe wrote, "Sometimes I wonder; This man that is still held in captivity because Harrison allegedly pilfered the cash. I hope he is still alive and well." He further expressed a chilling fear that the increased public attention might force the kidnappers' hand, stating, "I sincerely hope the kidnappers don’t panic that the spotlight is on them and make them do something sinister."
Social Media Erupts with Mixed Reactions
The doctor's post sparked a fierce debate online, with Nigerians divided on the issue and the fate of the unknown victim.
Ifeanyichukwu Frank Ezeh placed direct blame on Gwamnishu, arguing that the activist's alleged actions endangered a life. He stated, "If the man don't survive with kidnappers, the family of the man will hold Harrison gwamnishu responsible. Assume Harrison didn't divert the money, the man would have been out by now." He emphasized that past good deeds cannot excuse present wrongdoing.
Others questioned the timing of the public campaign against Gwamnishu. Ade Damola commented, "He cannot be okay oh..he will collect the impact of all the online cruise ..i honestly dont see him making it back..I cant understand why folks didnt just wait until he was free before initiating the online campaign."
Meanwhile, Frank Ejiofor pointed out the unsettling radio silence from the kidnappers, noting it was an "uncomfortable situation that the kidnappers have not been in touch with the family with a new update at least."
Background of the Gwamnishu Case
The saga began when Harrison Gwamnishu, a well-known activist, was detained after being accused of interfering with ransom payments meant for kidnap victims. According to a separate report, a woman named Gwen shared WhatsApp chats showing that Gwamnishu had been invited by the Chief of Staff of the Edo State governor for meetings on state security.
He reportedly met with government officials and the Commissioner of Police on Monday, December 1. His detention over the Auchi kidnap case followed on Thursday, December 4.
The case has ignited a national conversation on accountability, activism, and the dire consequences of kidnapping in Nigeria. The primary concern, as highlighted by Dr. Aligwekwe, remains the precarious situation of the individual whose freedom was allegedly compromised.
