In a significant counter-terrorism operation, Nigerian military forces have apprehended three individuals suspected of working as recruitment agents for the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). The arrest took place in Banki, a town in Borno State, dealing a blow to the terrorist group's efforts to replenish its ranks.
Covert Operation Based on Tip-Off
The successful operation was conducted by troops of Operation Hadin Kai on January 17, 2026. Acting on credible intelligence provided by the Banki District Head, military intelligence operatives were deployed to the town on a covert mission. Their target was a cell allegedly involved in radicalizing and recruiting young people for terrorist activities.
The operatives moved in and captured the suspects while they were actively attempting to enlist and transport youths for training. The arrested individuals have been identified as Gajibo Kayama, Tahiru Modu, and Bulama Modu.
Suspects' Alleged Activities and Background
According to security sources, the trio is suspected of focusing on recruiting youths aged between 17 and 20 from within Banki town. Their alleged goal was to funnel these recruits to ISWAP elements operating in neighboring Adamawa State for military and ideological training.
Preliminary investigations reveal a concerning detail about the suspects' backgrounds. They are said to be former ISWAP members who had previously claimed to have repented and renounced terrorism approximately five years ago. However, security forces allege they had returned to their old ways, secretly re-engaging in recruitment activities for the terrorist organization.
Handover and Ongoing Investigations
Following their arrest, the three suspects have been transferred to the Military Intelligence Regiment for a detailed and comprehensive interrogation. This process is standard procedure to extract vital information about their network, methods, and any planned operations.
The military's action underscores the ongoing vigilance required to combat terrorism in Nigeria's northeast. It also highlights the critical role that community cooperation, such as the tip-off from the local traditional leader, plays in supporting security operations. The arrest prevents the potential radicalization of vulnerable young Nigerians and disrupts a suspected pipeline for terrorist manpower.
