In a solemn tribute marking the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has extended its condolences to the families of military personnel who died in service. The party has simultaneously issued a strong call to the Federal Government, urging a significant prioritization of improved welfare and adequate funding for the nation's security agencies.
PDP's Call for Sober Reflection and Action
In a statement released on Thursday, January 15, 2026, the party's National Chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, described the fallen personnel as heroes who paid the ultimate price to defend Nigeria's territorial integrity and sovereignty. The PDP framed the occasion as a critical moment for national reflection on the immense sacrifices made by members of the armed forces and the broader security and intelligence community.
The party argued that enhanced welfare packages are imperative to boost the morale of serving officers and enable them to perform their duties more effectively. Furthermore, the PDP pressed the government to ensure adequate funding for all security agencies, a move it believes is essential to strengthen their operational capacity to neutralize criminal threats and restore lasting peace across the country.
"On a day like this, we acknowledge that they paid the supreme price for the continuous existence of our country," the PDP's statement read. It emphasized that the sacrifices of the fallen must never be taken for granted and must be met with tangible support for those still serving.
A Plea for National Unity and Peace
Beyond funding and welfare, the opposition party issued a caution to all actors, both state and non-state. It warned against any actions capable of destabilizing the nation, stressing that national unity and peace remain paramount. The PDP concluded its message with prayers for the repose of the souls of the departed, expressing hope that their deaths were not in vain and that their legacy of service would be perpetually honoured.
Military Leadership Advocates for Whole-of-Society Approach
In a related development, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, reaffirmed the Armed Forces' resolve in combating terrorism and all forms of criminality threatening Nigeria's peace and democracy. He made these remarks at the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day regimental dinner held on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
General Oluyede, however, presented a crucial caveat: the military alone cannot preserve the national heritage. He outlined that the path forward requires a "whole-of-society" approach, which is central to his strategic philosophy for the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
"Accordingly, we must continue to build strong relationships with local communities and foster cordial collaboration with sister security agencies," the CDS stated. He praised the troops for prevailing against daunting challenges and winning the hearts of citizens, noting that their efforts have significantly bridged the trust gap between the military and the civilian population.
As the regimental dinner commenced, General Oluyede expressed his hope that the spirit of remembrance and comradeship would strengthen the bonds within the armed forces family. He called for the evening to renew their collective sense of purpose and inspire continued service with honour, professionalism, and selfless devotion.
