Another batch of 271 Nigerians has been successfully evacuated from South Africa to Nigeria. The aircraft carrying them arrived at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos on Friday morning, July 3, marking the fourth evacuation operation by the Federal Government since anti-immigrant protests erupted in South Africa.
Fourth Evacuation Operation
This latest evacuation brings the total number of stranded Nigerians brought back from South Africa to 874. The repatriation efforts come in response to widespread xenophobic attacks and protests by aggrieved South Africans, who have demanded that all undocumented foreigners leave the country, accusing them of taking jobs and introducing crime into society.
Government Response
The Federal Government has been coordinating the evacuations to ensure the safety of its citizens. The evacuees were received at the airport by officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other government agencies, who facilitated their documentation and transportation to their final destinations.
Background
The anti-immigrant protests in South Africa have led to heightened tensions and violence against foreign nationals, particularly Nigerians. The Nigerian government has condemned the attacks and has been working with South African authorities to secure the safe passage of its citizens.
