Workers at the Polaris Bank Tower located at 61/65 Broad Street, Lagos Island, scrambled to safety on Wednesday after a fire broke out on the third floor of the building. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded swiftly and successfully extinguished the blaze before it could spread to other parts of the 17-storey structure.
Fire Incident Details
The incident was reported at approximately 11:33 a.m. and involved a stationary saloon car parked on the third floor, which serves as a parking facility for the building. Firefighters from the Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu Fire Stations promptly arrived at the scene and contained the flames, preventing them from spreading to other vehicles and sections of the building. The only damage recorded was to the affected vehicle and its immediate surroundings, with no casualties or injuries reported. The firefighting operation was successfully concluded, and normalcy was restored to the area.
Police Security Assessment at Pan-Atlantic University
In a related development, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, led operational personnel of the command on an on-the-spot security assessment visit to Pan-Atlantic University. This followed a viral video showing two masked individuals emerging from a forested area adjoining the institution. During the visit, the commissioner engaged with the university management and emphasized the need to continuously strengthen the institution's security architecture. He advised the management on practical measures to enhance security across the campus and stressed the importance of avoiding actions that could undermine existing security efforts.
Deployment of Surveillance Drones
As part of efforts to support security operations in the area, the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) deployed surveillance drones in response to the incident. The deployment, facilitated by the Lagos State Government, is aimed at strengthening aerial surveillance, intelligence gathering, and crime prevention within and around the area. The commissioner reassured the management, staff, students, and parents of the command's commitment to the protection of lives and property across the state. He urged the institution to take proactive steps to improve perimeter security, strengthen access control measures, and maintain close collaboration with security agencies.
