In a bid to promote the wellbeing of media practitioners, more than 300 journalists in the Federal Capital Territory have benefited from free medical screening as the NUJ FCT Council launched activities for the 2026 Press Week in Abuja.
Medical Screening Details
Conducted over the weekend by Nizamiye Hospital, the screening included consultations and medical advice, granting participants access to specialists in cardiology, ophthalmology, general practice, laboratory services, pharmacy, and nursing care.
NUJ Chairman's Remarks
Comrade Grace Ike, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, stated that the initiative highlights the need for journalists to prioritize their health alongside professional duties. She noted that many media practitioners often neglect their own wellbeing while serving the public interest.
Commending Nizamiye Hospital for its partnership, she emphasized that a healthy journalist is better equipped to serve society with excellence. Ike urged journalists nationwide to strengthen ethical standards in reporting, warning that misinformation and propaganda threaten democratic stability ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The press has a sacred duty to protect truth, defend accountability, and preserve the integrity of our democratic process,” she said. She called for accurate, balanced, and professional coverage as the country approaches another electoral cycle.
Medical Representatives' Perspective
Dr. Uwchukwu Chetachi, a medical representative at the outreach, explained that the exercise aimed to provide journalists with preventive healthcare services, early diagnosis, and professional medical guidance. Participants identified with serious health conditions would be referred for further treatment and management at appropriate facilities.
Press Week Theme and Activities
The medical outreach was part of the opening events for the NUJ FCT Council’s 2026 Press Week, themed: “2027 Election: Defending Democracy in the Era of Disinformation.” Obas Esiedesa, Chairman of the Press Week Planning Committee, noted that the week-long program would also feature capacity-building sessions and discussions on media safety, journalism ethics, and public interest reporting. He thanked partners and committee members for their contributions to the program's success.
