The Palestinian football community is in mourning after the death of goalkeeper Saleem Al-Ashqar, who was allegedly shot by the Israeli military in Gaza. The 26-year-old, who played for Khan Younis Services Club, died on June 29 in Al-Qarara, northeast of Khan Younis. He leaves behind a pregnant wife, whom he married just five months ago, and was the only brother among seven sisters.
Conflict Claims Over 1,000 Palestinian Athletes
The Palestinian Football Association (PFA) confirmed that Al-Ashqar is among more than 1,000 athletes killed since the conflict escalated in October 2023. According to Al Jazeera, Al-Ashqar was a recognized talent in Palestinian football. The PFA stated that his death adds to the devastating toll on sports figures in the region.
Destruction of Sports Facilities
Palestinian Olympic Committee vice president Asaad Al-Majdalawi reported that 265 sports facilities in Gaza have been damaged, with 184 completely destroyed and 81 partially damaged. He said via IOL: "This destruction has deprived thousands of young people and adolescents of their right to train and practice sports." Al-Majdalawi also noted that dozens of female athletes have been killed since the conflict began.
