A tragic auto crash on the Sagamu–Siun–Kabape–Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun State has claimed the life of a police officer attached to an escort van. The officer was burnt alive in the accident, which occurred at the Iyana Obafe axis on Saturday. Three other individuals sustained injuries in the collision involving a bullion van belonging to Bemil, two Toyota Hilux escort vehicles, and a silo truck with registration number KRD 945 YL.
Details of the Incident
The spokesperson for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Sunday. He explained that the crash took place inbound Siun, near the President Muhammadu Buhari Estate along the highway. According to Akinbiyi, four persons were involved in the accident. While three suffered varying degrees of injuries, one victim was burnt alive.
Cause of the Crash
Akinbiyi stated that the accident occurred when the driver of the truck drove against traffic and collided with one of the escort vehicles. The impact resulted in the death of the police officer attached to the escort team. The truck's reckless driving was identified as the primary cause of the tragedy.
Rescue Operations and Response
Operatives from TRACE, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Amotekun Corps promptly arrived at the scene to conduct rescue operations. Their efforts were coordinated to ensure the safety of other road users and to manage the aftermath of the crash.
Medical Attention and Mortuary
The injured victims were rushed to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) by good Samaritans who volunteered to assist. Meanwhile, the remains of the deceased police officer were deposited at the Owode Egba General Hospital morgue for preservation and further procedures.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers of reckless driving on Nigerian highways. Authorities have urged motorists to adhere to traffic regulations to prevent such avoidable accidents.
