Fatal Multiple-Vehicle Collision Claims Six Lives Near Ibadan Toll Gate
A devastating road accident involving several vehicles, including gas tankers, articulated trucks, and private cars, occurred on the night of June 19, 2026, near the Ibadan toll gate section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The crash resulted in six fatalities and left multiple people injured, causing a massive traffic jam that stranded hundreds of motorists for hours.
The Oyo State Fire Service confirmed the incident, stating that emergency responders were alerted by a distress call from a police officer at approximately 9:29 p.m. Firefighters were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they encountered six damaged vehicles, some already engulfed in flames.
Emergency Response and Rescue Operations
According to Moroof Akinwande, Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, the crew acted swiftly to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to other vehicles and nearby properties. "The crew quickly swung into action, and the fire was restricted from causing further damage to other vehicles and nearby properties," he said. Six people lost their lives in the crash, while eight others were rescued and handed over to the Federal Road Safety Corps for medical treatment.
Preliminary investigations suggest that brake failure may have caused the accident, though authorities plan to conduct further assessments to determine the exact cause.
Massive Traffic Disruption on Nigeria's Busiest Highway
The accident caused a severe traffic backlog along the expressway, one of Nigeria's busiest routes. Burnt vehicles blocked sections of the road, forcing commuters to endure hours of gridlock. Social media videos showed long queues of trucks, buses, and private cars stretching across the highway, with charred vehicle parts and burnt tyres visible at the scene.
Comedian Bayegun Oluwatoyin, popularly known as Woli Arole, was among those caught in the traffic. He shared a video describing the situation: "If you are planning to come to Ibadan today just stay. People have been here three to four hours. I think there was car burnt on the way yesterday or so. It's serious. See where we dey so and we are close to Guru Maharaj Ji. Stay at home."
Safety Warnings and Recommendations
Following the tragedy, the fire service urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and equipped with functional fire extinguishers. Officials also advised road users to exercise caution, particularly on major highways where mechanical failures can quickly lead to devastating consequences.
This incident is the latest in a series of fatal accidents on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. In a previous crash, a pre-dawn collision claimed the lives of a father, mother, and their young child near the Secretariat inward Otedola Bridge corridor. Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of vehicle maintenance and adherence to traffic regulations to prevent such tragedies.
