A tragic accident involving a heavily loaded bucket truck has claimed the lives of a pedestrian and a motorcyclist along the Badagry Expressway in Lagos. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the incident occurred near the Iyana-Iba Flyover, heading toward the main gate of Lagos State University on the expressway.
According to preliminary findings, the truck driver was reportedly speeding from the Volkswagen area toward Badagry when he struck and killed a pedestrian. Instead of stopping after the crash, the driver allegedly continued driving along the corridor. In an attempt to stop the fleeing truck, a motorcyclist, accompanied by another rider, reportedly pursued the vehicle. However, the truck driver allegedly rammed into the motorcycle during the chase, killing the motorcyclist instantly, while the second rider escaped unhurt.
LASTMA stated that its Night Gang Surveillance and Monitoring Patrol Team, which was on routine overnight monitoring along the corridor, responded swiftly to the scene and evacuated the body of the motorcyclist trapped beneath the truck. The driver was immediately arrested by LASTMA officials and handed over to security operatives at the PPL Police Post, Okokomaiko, alongside officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps for further investigation. Authorities also evacuated the damaged motorcycle and the truck to the police station pending the conclusion of investigations. The remains of the pedestrian were later released to family members who arrived at the scene after being informed of the incident.
Reacting to the tragedy, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the families of the victims, describing the incident as another reminder of the dangers of reckless driving by truck operators on major highways. He urged drivers, particularly operators of articulated vehicles, to obey speed limits and traffic regulations to prevent avoidable deaths on Lagos roads. Bakare-Oki also reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to traffic enforcement, emergency response operations, and collaboration with security agencies to improve road safety across the state.
