Aiyedatiwa Hails Death Sentence for Owo Church Killers

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has praised the conviction of terrorists who attacked St Francis Catholic Church in Owo four years ago, calling it a victory for innocent victims. In a statement on Wednesday, the governor said justice has prevailed and commended the prosecution team and judiciary for their courage throughout the trial.

The attack occurred on June 5, 2022, when gunmen opened fire on worshippers during a church service, killing at least 40 people and injuring many others. The Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced four of the five defendants to death after finding them guilty on all nine charges.

Aiyedatiwa, through his Chief Press Secretary Ebenezer Adeniyan, stated that the verdict sends a clear message that the government will not tolerate acts of terror or violence. He noted that the diligence of investigators and the judiciary's courage demonstrate that perpetrators of such crimes will face the full weight of the law.

The governor also acknowledged the resilience of the Owo community and the Catholic Church, who have remained committed to peace despite the trauma. He assured residents that his administration will work with security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering and protect public spaces to prevent a recurrence.

While acknowledging that nothing can bring back the lost lives, Aiyedatiwa said the judgment provides closure and hope for justice. He prayed for the souls of the departed and for comfort for their families.
