AU Chairperson Condemns Maiduguri Bombing, Calls for International Support

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Youssouf, has issued a strong condemnation of the suicide bombings that occurred in Maiduguri, Borno State, northeastern Nigeria, on March 16, 2026. The tragic incident resulted in several fatalities and numerous injuries, marking a severe blow to the region's ongoing efforts to achieve stability.

Solidarity and Condolences Extended to Nigeria

In an official statement released on Wednesday, the African Union expressed its unwavering solidarity with the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria during this challenging period. The commission extended its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to all those injured in the attack.

Mahmoud Youssouf reiterated the African Union's unequivocal rejection and firm condemnation of all forms of violence perpetrated by terrorist elements and violent extremist groups against civilian populations and security officials. He emphasized that such acts constitute a grave violation of human rights and significantly undermine peace, security, and stability within affected communities.

Commendation for Counter-Terrorism Efforts

The chairperson commended the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as well as the Borno State authorities, for their sustained and collective efforts in countering terrorism and improving security conditions in Maiduguri and its surrounding areas over recent years. He acknowledged the progress made but highlighted the persistent threat posed by terrorism.

"This tragic incident underscores the persistent threat posed by terrorism and the need for continued vigilance and resilience," Youssouf stated, pointing to the ongoing challenges in the region.

Call for Enhanced International Support

Youssouf called on the international community to scale up support for Nigeria and the broader Lake Chad Basin region. He outlined several critical areas where enhanced assistance is urgently needed:

  • Increased humanitarian assistance to address the immediate needs of affected populations.
  • Capacity-building initiatives to strengthen local security forces and institutions.
  • Improved intelligence-sharing mechanisms to prevent future attacks.
  • Sustained investment in stabilisation and development initiatives aimed at addressing the root causes of violent extremism.

Path to Lasting Peace and Stability

The chairperson reaffirmed that only through a comprehensive, whole-of-society approach can the threat of terrorism be effectively defeated. He emphasized the importance of:

  1. Collective security and action strategies that involve all stakeholders.
  2. Strengthened cooperation between national, regional, and international partners.
  3. Sustained commitment to long-term peacebuilding efforts.

Youssouf stressed that these efforts must align with relevant African Union instruments and frameworks on conflict prevention, counter-terrorism, and peacebuilding. He concluded by reaffirming the full solidarity and unwavering support of the African Union to the Government and people of Nigeria in their pursuit of sustainable peace and stability.
