Bandits Kill Vice Principal, Two Others in Kogi Attack

Bandits have killed a vice principal and two other individuals in Iluke Bunu community, located in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State. The attack occurred on Wednesday morning, June 10, 2026, as the criminals attempted to abduct students who were writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Attack on UBE Iluke Bunu

Reports indicate that the primary target of the assault was UBE Iluke Bunu, where students were seated for their examination at the time of the invasion. During the attack, Mr. Gani Anifowose, the vice principal of Government Secondary School, Aharha-Bunu, was killed alongside two other community members.

Security Forces Respond Swiftly

Troops of the Nigerian Army stationed at Suku-Kiri Bunu, a nearby community, quickly responded to distress calls and arrived in Iluke Bunu, successfully foiling the abduction attempt. The Kogi State Government confirmed the terrorist attack and commended the security forces for preventing a mass abduction of WAEC candidates.

Government Statement

The State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, disclosed in a statement that the attackers invaded the community disguised in military uniforms. They disrupted the ongoing WAEC examination and attempted to march students into the bush. Fanwo confirmed that three community members were killed, including the vice principal.

According to him, the prompt intervention of military personnel, vigilantes, and local hunters led to a fierce gun battle with the attackers. All abducted students were rescued unhurt. One bandit was neutralized during the encounter, while others escaped with gunshot wounds.

Condolences and Commendation

The Kogi State Government expressed deep sadness over the attack and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, the Iluke Community, and the entire Bunu District. The government commended the swift response, exceptional bravery, and gallantry of military personnel and local security forces whose intervention prevented a mass abduction and further casualties.

Ongoing Operations

Reports available to the government indicate that the bandits disrupted the WAEC examination and had already begun marching students into the bush when security operatives engaged them. Due to superior firepower and professionalism, all students were rescued unharmed. One bandit was neutralized, and several others escaped with severe injuries. Security agencies are currently pursuing the fleeing criminals and intensifying efforts to apprehend all those connected with the attack.

Government Assurance

The Kogi State Government expressed profound appreciation to the military, local vigilantes, hunters, and other security personnel. It stated that additional security measures will be announced to safeguard lives and property. Residents are urged to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative with security agencies by providing timely and credible information.

The government declared that Kogi State will not submit to terror and that criminal elements will continue to face a determined, coordinated, and uncompromising response from security agencies.
