Boko Haram Behind Maiduguri Mosque Bomb Blast - Army

The Nigerian Army has officially attributed a deadly explosion at a mosque in Maiduguri to the terrorist group Boko Haram. The attack, which occurred during evening prayers, resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries, prompting heightened security across the Borno State capital.

Attack Details and Casualty Figures

The blast took place at approximately 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 24, 2025, at a mosque situated inside the bustling Gamboru Market in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council. According to a statement released on Christmas Day by Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer for Operation HADIN KAI, a suspected Boko Haram terrorist carried out a suicide bombing using an improvised explosive device.

The initial detonation killed the bomber and two civilians at the scene. Emergency services, including troops, police EOD teams, and officials from the Borno State Government and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), swiftly secured the area and evacuated the wounded.

Emergency Response and Rising Death Toll

Casualties were rushed to the General Hospital and the Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri for urgent medical care. While 32 civilians sustained various injuries, the situation tragically worsened at the medical facilities. Two of the injured later succumbed to their wounds, bringing the total death toll to five, including the suicide bomber. Medical personnel reported that two victims remain in critical condition, while the others are stable and receiving treatment.

Heightened Security and Public Advisory

In response to the attack, security forces have significantly increased surveillance and protective measures in Maiduguri and its environs. The military, through Operation HADIN KAI, has extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting citizens.

Given the timing during the yuletide season, the public is urged to exercise extreme vigilance. Security advisories specifically recommend:

  • Avoiding crowded areas where possible.
  • Maintaining extra alertness at places of worship, including churches.
  • Being observant of suspicious individuals, particularly teenagers acting strangely.
  • Promptly reporting any unusual persons or activities to the nearest security post.

The statement emphasized the collective responsibility of citizens in supporting security agencies to prevent further attacks and ensure safety during the festive period.
