The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has declared Sunday, June 14, as a nationwide 'Black Sunday' in honor of victims of terrorist attacks across the country. The association also announced a three-day national prayer program from June 12 to June 14, seeking divine intervention for the worsening security situation in Nigeria.
CAN Announces Date for 'Black Sunday' Nationwide
The announcement was made at the conclusion of the 2026 National Church Denominational Leadership Summit. CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, emphasized that prayers alone are insufficient to address the country's security challenges, calling for stronger and more decisive government action.
CAN Calls for Urgent Action on Insecurity
Speaking at the summit, Archbishop Okoh urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on insecurity. He also called for the accelerated implementation of state policing and decentralization of the security structure.
Appeal for Victims and Justice
Okoh demanded the unconditional release of all kidnapped persons across the country and insisted that justice must be served for victims of violent attacks. He stated: 'Prayers are not enough to tackle the security situation in the country,' adding that concrete actions are needed to address the menace.
CAN said the nationwide observance aims to unite Christians in prayer and reflection while drawing attention to the growing insecurity affecting communities across Nigeria.
