US-Nigeria Joint Ops Kill 200 ISIS Terrorists in Borno

Nigeria and the United States have achieved a significant milestone in their joint counterterrorism efforts, eliminating over 200 Islamic State (ISIS) militants and destroying their logistical infrastructure in northeastern Nigeria. The operations, conducted in coordination with the US Africa Command (US-Africom), targeted terrorist strongholds in Borno state, the epicenter of the country's long-running security crisis.

Joint Operations Yield Major Results

According to Rebecca Hayes, director of public affairs for US-Africom, the joint actions have successfully neutralized militants, dismantled checkpoints, and struck logistics centers. An update on US-Africom's official X account on June 10 stated: "AFRICOM, in continued coordination with Nigeria, conducted operations against ISIS fighters in NE Nigeria. No U.S. or Nigerian forces were harmed. The targeted operations eliminated more than 200 terrorists, including Abu-Bilal al-Minuki."

Nigerian Military Confirms Success

Samaila Uba, director of defence information at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), confirmed that the operations killed several high-value terrorist commanders and at least 200 insurgents. Uba spoke during an X Space jointly hosted by the DHQ and US-Africom on June 9, aimed at sensitizing Nigerians on the progress of the joint counterterrorism efforts that began in early 2026.

Uba noted that the collaboration has improved intelligence-driven operations, leading to the destruction of terrorist networks, enclaves, and logistic infrastructure, as well as enhanced surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities. He stated: "The partnership has also strengthened the operational readiness of Nigerian troops through specialised training programmes, intelligence-fusion initiatives, joint planning engagements, and professional military education."

Background of the Security Crisis

Borno state has been the epicenter of armed group activities, including Boko Haram and ISIS-affiliated factions, which have driven northern Nigeria's security crisis since 2009. The recent joint operations mark a significant step in degrading the capabilities of these extremist groups.

The successful operations are expected to be viewed positively by President Bola Tinubu and US President Donald Trump, reinforcing the bilateral commitment to combating terrorism in the region.
