Israel Adesanya Endures Fourth Consecutive UFC Defeat After Knockout Loss to Joe Pyfer
Nigerian-born UFC fighter Israel Adesanya has suffered his fourth straight defeat in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, marking a significant downturn in his once-stellar career. The former two-time middleweight champion faced off against Joe Pyfer in Washington on Saturday night, March 28, and was knocked out in the second round of their highly anticipated bout.
A Promising Start Turns Sour for Adesanya
Adesanya entered the fight amidst the worst run of his professional mixed martial arts career, having lost his previous three contests. Despite this, he began the match strongly, showcasing the skills that once made him a dominant champion. He managed to win the first round, displaying sharp striking and effective defense that hinted at a potential comeback.
However, the tide turned dramatically in the second stanza. As Adesanya began to hunt for a finish, Joe Pyfer capitalized on the opportunity, landing several powerful shots that shifted the momentum. The UFC Seattle main event quickly descended into a fierce brawl, with both fighters exchanging heavy blows in the center of the octagon.
Pyfer's Dominance Seals the Victory
The 29-year-old Joe Pyfer, ranked #14 in the middleweight division, demonstrated why he is considered a rising contender. After weathering Adesanya's early assault, Pyfer secured a crucial takedown and dominated once he got his opponent to the mat. From there, he unleashed a series of ground strikes that Adesanya struggled to defend against.
With Adesanya unable to mount an effective response, referee Herb Dean made the decision to wave off the fight, stopping the contest with 42 seconds remaining in the second round. This knockout loss adds to Adesanya's recent struggles, extending his losing streak to four consecutive fights.
A Stark Contrast to Past Glory
This defeat stands in stark contrast to Adesanya's previous achievements. Just three years ago, in April 2023, he was celebrated as one of the best fighters in the world after knocking out Alex Pereira at UFC 287 to reclaim the middleweight title. That victory, however, marked the beginning of a challenging period for the Nigerian-born star.
Following that win, Adesanya's career took a downward spiral. He suffered a unanimous decision defeat to Sean Strickland in their UFC 293 title fight, where he was dropped during the bout. The losses continued in August 2024 when Dricus du Plessis submitted him to defend the championship belt. Most recently, in February 2025, Nassourdine Imavov knocked out the 185-pound legend in the first round at UFC Saudi Arabia, leaving his career in a state of uncertainty.
The latest loss to Joe Pyfer only deepens the questions surrounding Adesanya's future in the sport. Once considered nearly invincible in the middleweight division, he now faces the difficult task of rebuilding his career and regaining his competitive edge. For Joe Pyfer, this victory represents a significant step forward, potentially positioning him for bigger opportunities in the UFC's competitive middleweight landscape.
