Dutch Football Legend Urges Raheem Sterling to Retire and Head to Ibiza

Former Netherlands international Rene van der Gijp has delivered a scathing assessment of Raheem Sterling's underwhelming performances at Feyenoord, bluntly suggesting the experienced winger should consider retiring from professional football altogether. Van der Gijp's comments come amid Sterling's struggles to make any meaningful impact since joining the Dutch club in January.

Sterling's Disappointing Start at Feyenoord

Raheem Sterling arrived at Feyenoord after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract with Chelsea earlier this year, but his time in the Eredivisie has been marked by frustration and lack of productivity. In five appearances for the Rotterdam-based side, Sterling has managed to contribute just a single assist, failing to score any goals or demonstrate the attacking flair that once made him a Premier League star.

His most recent outing against Ajax proved particularly disappointing, as head coach Robin van Persie substituted him after only 55 minutes while Feyenoord chased an equalizer in what ultimately finished as a 1-1 draw.

Van der Gijp's Blunt Assessment

Speaking candidly on the popular Willem & Wessel podcast, Van der Gijp did not mince words when discussing Sterling's situation. "He should just go to Robin van Persie and say: let's stop this. This isn't going to work," the former Dutch star declared. "This isn't good for me, for you, or for the club. You're not really helping anyone with this."

Van der Gijp then offered an alternative vision for Sterling's future, suggesting: "He should just go to Ibiza, put on his swimming trunks and eat a delicious paella with his wife. Then he'd be having a great time. But this isn't going to work out for him anymore. What a shame."

Additional Criticism from Dutch Football Circles

The criticism of Sterling's performances has not been limited to Van der Gijp alone. Fellow Dutch football personality Willem van Hanegem echoed similar sentiments, stating: "He just wasn't there again, no. If I were them, I would ask for my money back and say: just go home. You shouldn't put a player like that through. He used to be a good player... but that's about it."

These harsh assessments highlight the growing concern within Dutch football about Sterling's ability to contribute meaningfully to Feyenoord's campaign during the remainder of the season.

Van Persie's More Patient Approach

Despite the mounting criticism from pundits and former players, Feyenoord head coach Robin van Persie has indicated he remains willing to give Sterling more time to rediscover his form. "The most important thing is winning matches during this period of Raheem getting fitter and fitter," Van Persie explained. "I believe he's making steps... at the same time, I want to see more impact off the ball, more impact on the ball."

This more patient approach from the manager suggests Sterling may still have opportunities to turn his Feyenoord stint around, though the clock is ticking with his short-term contract set to expire at the end of the current season.

Sterling's Current Situation

The 31-year-old winger, who has not featured for the England national team since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, signed a deal with Feyenoord that runs only until the conclusion of the 2025-2026 campaign. This arrangement gives him limited time to prove his worth to the club and potentially earn a contract extension or attract interest from other teams.

Sterling's career trajectory has taken a significant downturn since his peak years at Manchester City, where he won multiple Premier League titles and established himself as one of England's most dangerous attacking players. His subsequent move to Chelsea failed to reignite his best form, and his current struggles in the Netherlands have raised serious questions about his future in the sport at the highest level.
