The body of a 20-year-old miner, Abdulmuminu Muhammad, was discovered along the Gana Ropp-Barkin Ladi road in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State on Saturday, August 23, 2026, bearing machete wounds. According to Daily Trust, Muhammad had left for a mining activity on August 22 and failed to return, prompting his relatives to launch a search that ended in tragedy.

Discovery of the Body and Family's Search

Muhammad's relatives grew increasingly anxious as hours passed without any sign of him. They began searching for him, and around noon on August 23, they found his body dumped along the road. The discovery confirmed their worst fears, and the family was plunged into mourning over the violent nature of his death.

The deceased's grandfather, Imam Muhammed Abdullahi, confirmed the killing and expressed deep anguish over the circumstances. Grandfather's Account and Community Confirmation

In a detailed statement, Imam Abdullahi recounted the sequence of events: "I am the grandfather of the deceased. Yesterday, his relatives did not see him up to the evening, and they began to look for his whereabouts because everyone was worried. Around 12 p.m., they found him dead along the Gana Ropp-Barki Ladi Road. We are disturbed by what happened to him because the nature of the killing is barbaric and inhumane. He was killed and macheted. The killing has really touched us."

Danjuma Ibrahim, a youth leader in the area, also confirmed the incident on Sunday, adding weight to the family's account. The confirmation from local figures underscores the impact of the killing on the Barkin Ladi community, which has seen repeated attacks on miners and other workers in recent months.

Funeral and Official Response

Muhammad was buried on Sunday morning following a funeral prayer held in Barkin Ladi town. Hundreds of sympathisers attended the service, reflecting the community's solidarity with the bereaved family. The funeral was a somber occasion, with many residents expressing grief over the loss of a young life.

At the time of reporting, Captain Polycarp Oteh, the spokesman for Operation Enduring Peace in Plateau State, had not responded to an inquiry about the incident. The lack of an official response leaves questions about the investigation and security measures unanswered, as the community seeks justice for Muhammad.

Context of Attacks on Miners in Plateau State

This incident is not isolated. Legit.ng earlier reported that three miners were shot dead along the GSS Daffo Road in Bokkos local government area of Plateau State. That attack occurred on the evening of July 30, 2026, around 7:15 p.m., as the victims returned from a mining site at Fubok in Daffo District. Residents described it as another targeted attack on workers returning from mining activities.

The recurring violence against miners in Plateau State raises concerns about the safety of workers in the region. Community leaders and residents have called for enhanced security measures to protect miners and other laborers from such attacks, though official responses remain limited.
