Former AFCON Winner Advocates for Nigerian Coach to Lead Super Eagles
Sylvanus Okpala, a former assistant coach of the Super Eagles and a winner of the Africa Cup of Nations, has made a compelling appeal to the Nigeria Football Federation to replace current head coach Eric Chelle with a Nigerian. Okpala argues that the national team can only realize its full potential under homegrown leadership, emphasizing the historical successes of local coaches in Nigerian football.
Praise for Chelle's Achievements Amid Calls for Change
While acknowledging Eric Chelle's contributions, Okpala believes it is time for Nigeria to look inward for sustained success. Chelle took over from Finidi George in January 2025 and has guided the Super Eagles through a challenging period. Under his management, Nigeria stabilized its World Cup qualifying campaign, securing four wins and two draws in six matches to advance to the CAF playoffs. Additionally, Chelle led the team to a bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where they won five consecutive matches and established a robust defensive structure before falling in the semi-finals.
Despite an impressive record of 14 wins and seven draws in 21 matches, Okpala contends that Chelle's progress is insufficient for Nigeria's long-term ambitions. In an interview with Punch, Okpala stated, "I am not saying he is not a good coach. He is a good coach, but his best is not where we are supposed to be. From where we are today, and where we need to go, Nigerian coaches will take us there."
Historical Precedents of Nigerian Coaching Success
Okpala's call is rooted in the achievements of past Nigerian coaches who have stepped up during difficult times. He cited examples such as Stephen Keshi, who led Nigeria to victory in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations; Shuaibu Amodu, known for securing multiple World Cup qualifications; and Christian Chukwu, who earned a bronze medal at the 2004 AFCON. These figures demonstrated that local leadership can foster stability, national pride, and reliance on homegrown talent, qualities Okpala believes are essential as the Super Eagles prepare for future tournaments.
NFF's Stance on Chelle's Future and Ongoing Debates
Eric Chelle's contract has not been officially extended by the NFF, adding uncertainty to his tenure. Recently, he led the Super Eagles to a 2-1 friendly victory against Iran on March 27, 2026. While on-field results remain positive, the debate over foreign versus local management is intensifying, with Okpala's comments reigniting discussions about the future direction of Nigeria's football leadership. The NFF has clarified that reports linking Chelle to Morocco and Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca are unfounded, emphasizing that the manager remains focused on the Nigerian national team.
For the Super Eagles, the critical question is whether the NFF will continue with Chelle's steady hand or heed Okpala's call for a Nigerian coach to lead the team into its next chapter. This decision will significantly impact the team's strategy and identity as they aim for greater achievements on the international stage.
