Alex Iwobi Opens Up About Painful Arsenal Departure Orchestrated by Unai Emery
Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has delivered an emotional revelation about his unexpected exit from Arsenal Football Club in 2019, detailing how former manager Unai Emery played a pivotal role in forcing his departure from the club he considered home.
The Nigerian international, who emerged from Arsenal's prestigious Hale End academy and made his senior debut under legendary manager Arsene Wenger in 2015, described the period as both "mad" and emotionally devastating during a recent interview with the High Performance Podcast.
The Dubai Holiday That Changed Everything
Iwobi recounted how his career trajectory shifted dramatically during what was supposed to be a relaxing family holiday in Dubai following the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, where Nigeria secured a third-place finish. Unai Emery had granted players additional recovery time after the tournament, but Iwobi's vacation took an unexpected turn when his agent informed him of Everton's substantial £40 million bid.
"I said, 'Nice, what do you think? I'm kind of comfortable at Arsenal,'" Iwobi recalled, expressing his initial reluctance to leave the club he had grown up supporting. The timing coincided with Arsenal's record signing of Nicolas Pepe from Lille, a move that Iwobi initially saw as healthy competition rather than a threat to his position.
Arsenal's Financial Priorities Override Player Loyalty
Despite Iwobi's determination to prove himself against the newly arrived Pepe, who had contributed to 33 goals in his final Ligue 1 season, events escalated beyond the midfielder's control. While on a yacht in Dubai with diminishing phone connection, Iwobi learned that Everton manager Marco Silva wanted to speak with him directly.
"They told me Arsenal had already handed in the medical," Iwobi revealed. "They might want you gone because they need to sell someone." This moment crystallized the harsh reality that Arsenal's financial considerations outweighed Iwobi's personal desire to remain at his boyhood club.
From Heartbreak to Professional Growth
Despite the emotional strain of being pushed out against his wishes, Iwobi accepted the transfer to Everton, where he spent several seasons before eventually joining Fulham. Now 29 years old, the Nigerian midfielder is experiencing one of his most productive campaigns yet, with four goals and three assists in 26 appearances across all competitions this season.
Reflecting on the difficult transition, Iwobi acknowledged that while the situation was painful, it ultimately contributed to his maturation as a professional footballer. "The experience helped me grow as a player," he admitted, demonstrating resilience in the face of career adversity.
A Milestone Achievement at Fulham
In a separate development highlighting his career progression, Iwobi recently celebrated a significant personal achievement by making his 100th appearance for Fulham across all competitions during their 2-1 FA Cup victory over Stoke City on February 16. This milestone underscores his established presence at Craven Cottage following his journey from Arsenal's academy to becoming a Premier League mainstay.
The revelations from Iwobi's interview provide rare insight into the often-unseen business decisions that shape football careers, particularly how managerial changes and financial pressures can override player loyalty and personal connections to clubs.
