Jamaica Coach Explains Reggae Boyz Loss to Nigeria in Unity Cup Final
Jamaica Coach on Unity Cup Loss to Nigeria

Jamaica's head coach Rudolph Speid has explained why his team lost to Nigeria in the final of the 2026 Unity Cup, held in Charlton, England. The Super Eagles defeated the Reggae Boyz 3-0 at The Valley, with Yusuf Alhassan scoring a brace and stand-in captain Terem Moffi adding a goal.

Speid Attributes Defeat to Inexperience

Rudolph Speid blamed the loss on the lack of experience in his squad, emphasizing that personnel changes disrupted preparations. He noted, "We have a lot of young players. Even after the first game the team was younger. Some other players for personal reasons had to withdraw from the squad."

Speid, who led Jamaica in the 2026 FIFA World Cup intercontinental playoff against DR Congo, views these matches as part of a learning process for his developing team. "The reward in this time was never to say play against Nigeria and win. It was about building a team for the future," he explained. He added, "The game wasn't a junior game. We made some lapses because of the inexperience of the players on set pieces."

Nigeria's Fourth Unity Cup Title

Nigeria claimed the Unity Cup for the fourth time, with three of those victories coming against Jamaica in the final. Both nations failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, losing to DR Congo in the playoffs. Jamaica is set to face South Africa in a friendly on June 5, while Nigeria will play Poland and Portugal on June 3 and 10.

Moffi Addresses Competition in Super Eagles

Terem Moffi, who captained Nigeria in the Unity Cup, spoke about the intense competition for striker positions in the Super Eagles, contrasting with Jamaica's youthful squad. "You always have to look for ways to improve. I am not at my best; I have to reach a higher level. If you want to play for the Super Eagles, we have top strikers, so you have to consistently perform at your best," he told Molatsportgist. Moffi is expected to lead the attack following Victor Osimhen's withdrawal from the squad for the upcoming matches against Poland and Portugal.
