Former NFF President Amaju Pinnick Speaks Out on CAF's Controversial AFCON Decision
Former Nigeria Football Federation President Amaju Pinnick has publicly defended the Confederation of African Football following the organization's controversial decision to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title. The dramatic development occurred after Morocco successfully appealed the initial verdict regarding incidents during the AFCON 2025 final.
CAF's Decision and Immediate Fallout
The CAF Appeal Board made the unprecedented move to overturn the original judgment, awarding Morocco a 3-0 walkover victory and consequently the championship title. This decision came after the Moroccan Football Federation appealed sanctions imposed on both Senegal and Morocco for incidents that occurred during the final match on January 18, 2026.
The Senegalese Football Federation has vehemently rejected this new ruling and announced plans to take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The decision has sparked widespread criticism throughout the African football community, with much of the backlash directed at CAF President Patrice Motsepe.
Pinnick's Passionate Defense of CAF Leadership
During an exclusive interview with Arise TV, former NFF boss Amaju Pinnick launched a passionate defense of CAF and its leadership under President Patrice Motsepe. Pinnick acknowledged that reactions have been predominantly negative, attributing this to widespread surprise and misunderstanding about CAF's work for African football development.
"It came as a surprise to a lot of people, and I just feel that the optics have not been very good since the verdict came out," Pinnick stated in a video shared on social media platform X. "I'm not going to speak on the legality or the technicality of the game, I just feel very bad that the leadership of CAF is being questioned, knowing fully well that the leadership is well and truly committed to building football in Africa beyond the comprehension of anybody."
Defending the Independence of CAF Boards
Pinnick emphasized the independence of CAF's decision-making bodies, explaining that both the Appeal Board and Disciplinary Board were elected through proper channels rather than appointed by Motsepe or the Executive Council. He detailed how these board members underwent thorough scrutiny of their eligibility and integrity before being elected at the CAF Congress, which serves as the organization's highest decision-making body.
"We have a president, Patrice Motsepe, who does not believe in what I'll call military democracy or independent military democracy, so to speak," Pinnick elaborated. "He believes in the independence of the commission and that they should be allowed to do their job. He doesn't want to interfere because if they fail, they won't be re-elected."
Praising Motsepe's Contributions to African Football
The former NFF president went further to praise Motsepe's contributions to African football, highlighting his efforts to increase AFCON prize money and steer CAF toward greater financial sustainability. Pinnick expressed disappointment with the recent outrage directed at CAF leadership, suggesting that critics may not fully appreciate the organization's broader work for football development across the continent.
This defense comes after Motsepe himself addressed the controversy, explaining CAF's organizational structure as fundamentally independent, with each board empowered to exercise its own judgment without executive interference. The South African billionaire has positioned himself as a leader committed to institutional independence rather than personal control over decision-making processes.
The situation continues to develop as Senegal prepares its legal challenge while Morocco celebrates its newly awarded championship title. The football community across Africa remains divided on the decision, with many questioning the precedent it sets for future tournament disputes and appeals.
