Senegal Demands Independent Probe After CAF Strips AFCON Title, Awards It to Morocco

The Senegalese government has issued a formal demand for an independent international investigation into alleged corruption following the Confederation of African Football's controversial decision to strip Senegal of its Africa Cup of Nations title. In a dramatic reversal, CAF awarded the championship victory to Morocco, sparking outrage and accusations of undermining the sport's integrity.

The Controversial Final and Walk-Off Incident

The controversy originates from the AFCON final held in Rabat on January 18, where Senegalese players staged a brief walk-off protest after Morocco was awarded a late penalty during stoppage time. Following intervention from captain Sadio Mané, the players returned to the pitch. Morocco subsequently missed the penalty kick, and Pape Gueye scored in extra time to secure a 1-0 victory for Senegal.

CAF's Decision and Senegal's Reaction

On Tuesday, March 17, CAF announced it had upheld an appeal by Morocco, ruling that Senegal had forfeited the match due to the walk-off. The governing body declared the official result would be recorded as 3-0 in favor of Morocco. Reacting strongly, Senegal's government spokesperson Marie Rose Khady Fatou Faye condemned the decision, stating it "seriously undermines CAF's own credibility" by questioning a properly played match result.

Faye described the ruling as "a grossly illegal and profoundly unjust decision" and confirmed Senegal would pursue legal action, including taking the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport within 48 hours. The Senegalese Football Federation has formally requested CAF suspend enforcement of the decision and halt any trophy return to Morocco pending arbitration.

Complications with Detained Fans

The dispute has been further complicated by the detention of 18 Senegalese fans in Morocco following unrest during the match. In February, these supporters were convicted on charges including violence against security personnel and property damage, receiving prison sentences ranging from three months to one year alongside fines.

Senegal's government reiterated its solidarity with the detained citizens and emphasized its commitment to ensuring a swift and positive resolution to both the legal and diplomatic aspects of this crisis. The situation continues to develop as Senegal prepares its legal challenge and calls for transparency in football governance.
