Football Legend George Weah Blasts CAF Over Senegal AFCON Title Decision
AC Milan icon and former Liberian president George Oppong Weah has issued a scathing response after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) controversially stripped Senegal of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations championship. The decision, announced on March 18, 2026, has sparked widespread debate across the football community.
Controversial CAF Ruling Overturns Initial Verdict
The African football governing body initially sanctioned both Senegal and Morocco following an incident during the tournament's final match on January 18, 2025. However, after the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) appealed the decision, CAF's Appeal Board reversed the original judgment from January 29.
The new ruling awarded Morocco a 3-0 walkover victory and consequently transferred the AFCON title to the North African nation. Senegal has vehemently rejected this decision and is preparing to take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Weah's Strong Criticism of CAF Appeal Board
In a detailed statement posted on his official Facebook page, the three-time African Footballer of the Year and Ballon d'Or winner condemned what he called "an unpardonable error" by the CAF Appeal Board. Weah emphasized the fundamental principle that the referee's decisions during a match are final and must be respected.
The football legend explained: "In football, the Laws of the Game are clear: the referee on the pitch is the final authority on decisions made during a match. Once play continues and the match is completed, the result on the field must stand."
Reference to FIFA Laws and Match Officials' Authority
Weah specifically referenced Law 5 of the game, which grants referees full authority during matches. He noted that CAF regulations align with FIFA's Laws of the Game, which state: "The referee has full authority to enforce the Laws of the Game in connection with the match to which he has been appointed, and decisions on facts related to play are final."
The former Manchester City and Monaco star highlighted that in the AFCON final between Senegal and Morocco, the referee allowed the match to continue after Senegal's walk-off incident. The game proceeded through extra time and reached a conclusion on the field of play.
"For this reason," Weah argued, "the subsequent decision by CAF committee, taken after the match had already been concluded, should not override the authority exercised by the referee during the game in keeping with the Laws of the Game - Law 5."
Weah's Public Position and CAF President's Response
The football icon has publicly recognized Senegal as the legitimate winners of the 2025 AFCON tournament and urged the general public to disregard social media content endorsing CAF's Appeal Board decision.
Meanwhile, CAF president Patrice Motsepe has acknowledged Senegal's right to challenge the ruling through proper legal channels. Motsepe emphasized that all member nations must be allowed to defend their interests within the established framework of sports governance.
This controversy continues to unfold as Senegal prepares its legal challenge, while the football world watches closely how this unprecedented situation will be resolved in African football history.
