In a major move to strengthen Nigeria's digital presence, the Senate has joined forces with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) to rally over 120,000 Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) across the country toward adopting the .ng domain name.
Unified Digital Identity for Government
The initiative aims to create a cohesive digital identity for all government entities, enhancing citizen trust and improving service delivery. Senator Shuaib Salisu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity, emphasized that this move represents a crucial step in Nigeria's digital transformation journey.
'This is about national pride and digital sovereignty,' Senator Salisu declared during the recent stakeholders meeting. 'When citizens see a .ng domain, they should immediately recognize it as an authentic government platform.'
NITDA and BPP Lead Implementation
The National Information Technology Development Agency will spearhead the technical implementation, while the Bureau of Public Procurement will ensure compliance through procurement regulations. This powerful combination creates both the incentive and enforcement mechanism needed for widespread adoption.
NITDA Director General Kashifu Inuwa highlighted the multiple benefits, stating: 'The .ng domain not only promotes our national identity but also enhances cybersecurity. It keeps our data within national jurisdiction and makes it harder for fraudsters to create fake government websites.'
Addressing Current Adoption Challenges
Currently, many Nigerian government agencies still use generic .com, .org, or .edu domains, creating confusion among citizens and security vulnerabilities. The new mandate will systematically transition all MDAs to the .ng namespace, with implementation timelines and support mechanisms being developed.
The stakeholders identified several key advantages of this transition:
- Enhanced Security: Better control over national digital assets
 - Improved Trust: Citizens can easily identify legitimate government sites
 - Economic Benefits: Keeping domain registration revenue within Nigeria
 - Digital Sovereignty: Strengthening Nigeria's control over its internet presence

Roadmap for Nationwide Implementation
The collaboration between legislative, regulatory, and procurement bodies creates a comprehensive framework for success. The BPP's involvement ensures that compliance becomes part of the procurement process for all government agencies, making adoption mandatory rather than optional.
This initiative represents one of the most significant digital identity projects in Nigeria's history, potentially affecting how millions of citizens interact with government services online. The transition to .ng domains is expected to roll out in phases, with larger agencies leading the way and smaller departments following according to established timelines.
As Nigeria continues to embrace digital transformation, this unified approach to government domains marks a pivotal moment in the nation's journey toward technological self-reliance and digital security.
