WhatsApp to Let Users Chat Without Sharing Phone Numbers
WhatsApp to Let Users Chat Without Sharing Phone Numbers

Meta has announced a significant update to WhatsApp that will enable users to communicate using unique usernames instead of phone numbers. The change, which will be introduced gradually over the coming months, aims to enhance privacy by preventing automatic exposure of phone numbers in group chats or initial conversations.

How the New System Works

According to the company, users will have the option to select a unique username to share with others. WhatsApp stated in a release: "Designed to protect the privacy of your phone number." Under the new system, individuals will no longer be added or contacted solely through their phone numbers. Instead, others will need to know and enter the exact username, as there will be no public directory or search suggestions available.

Meta elaborated: "There’s no directory to browse and no suggestions, so people need to know your exact username to contact you." This approach ensures that phone numbers remain hidden unless the user chooses to share them.

Username Availability and Rollout

Given WhatsApp's global user base of over three billion people, the company acknowledged that not all users will be able to secure their preferred usernames. The rollout will commence gradually, with users notified when username reservations become available in their region. Additionally, Meta noted that creators, small businesses, and organizations will be able to claim usernames that match their existing handles on Facebook and Instagram.

Impact on Privacy and User Experience

This update represents a major step forward in user privacy, addressing long-standing concerns about phone number exposure. By decoupling communication from phone numbers, WhatsApp aims to reduce spam and unwanted contact while maintaining the ease of connecting with others. The feature is expected to be particularly beneficial for users in large group chats or those who wish to maintain a degree of anonymity.
