In a move to bolster regional integration, trade, and tourism, the Kenyan government has published the official list of countries whose nationals can enter Kenya without a visa in 2026. Out of 46 global territories granted visa-exempt status under the 'Category 1' classification, exactly 20 are African nations. However, Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, is conspicuously absent from the list, meaning Nigerian travelers must still obtain mandatory entry authorization before departure.
African Countries Allowed Visa-Free Entry to Kenya
According to official immigration guidelines from the Kenyan government, citizens from the following 20 African countries do not require a traditional visa to cross into Kenyan borders: Benin, Botswana, Burundi, Ethiopia, Ghana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa (for stays of less than 30 days), Swaziland (Eswatini), Seychelles, Tanzania, The Gambia, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
Nigeria Absent from Kenya's Visa-Free List
To the disappointment of many Nigerian travelers, Nigeria is not included in Kenya's Category 1 visa-exempt list. Historically, Nigeria fell under 'Category 2,' which required citizens to apply for and pay for an eVisa before landing. For Nigerian passport holders planning a trip to Nairobi or other parts of Kenya, the following steps are necessary: apply for an eTA via the official portal at least two weeks before travel, ensure the passport is valid for at least six months from the arrival date, and prepare supporting documents such as flight itinerary, proof of accommodation, and contact details.
Broader Context of Visa-Free Travel in Africa
The announcement comes amid a broader trend of African nations easing travel restrictions to promote intra-African trade and tourism. Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Germany updated its visa requirements, allowing only two African nations visa-free entry. Kenya's list, however, includes a significant number of African countries, reflecting its commitment to the African Union's Agenda 2063 and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) goals.
How to Apply for Kenya's eTA for Nigerians
Nigerian travelers must follow a clear procedure: visit the official eTA portal, submit the application at least two weeks before departure, ensure the passport is valid for six months, and upload flight itinerary, hotel bookings, and contact details. The eTA is mandatory for all Nigerian passport holders, and failure to obtain it may result in denied boarding or entry.
