Rwanda Offers Visa-on-Arrival to All Countries, Nigerians Free

Rwanda has positioned itself as one of the most accessible travel destinations globally by offering visa-on-arrival to citizens of every country. Under this policy, Nigerian passport holders can receive a free 30-day visitor visa upon arrival at any Rwandan entry point, thanks to Nigeria's membership in the African Union (AU) and the Commonwealth.

Rwanda's Visa-on-Arrival Policy Since 2018

Since January 1, 2018, the Republic of Rwanda, through its Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration, has allowed nationals of all countries to obtain a visa upon arrival without prior application. This open-door approach has made Rwanda a standout nation in Africa for global openness and travel convenience.

According to official guidelines from the Rwandan migration authority: "Citizens of countries members to the following international organizations; African Union, Commonwealth and La Francophonie get visa upon arrival and are waived visa fees for a visit of 30 days." This means that upon landing at Kigali International Airport or any land border, eligible travellers are issued a visitor visa free of charge.

Nigerians Enjoy Free Entry Under AU and Commonwealth Ties

Nigeria is a member of both the African Union and the Commonwealth. Because of these international partnerships, Nigerian citizens can enjoy visa-free entry into Rwanda under highly favourable terms. They do not need to apply in advance; a 30-day visitor visa is granted at the border at no cost.

This policy is particularly beneficial for business travellers and tourists from Nigeria, who can now visit Rwanda with minimal bureaucracy. The visa waiver applies to all AU, Commonwealth, and La Francophonie member states, covering a large portion of the globe.

Visa Categories and Stay Durations

Rwanda's visa regime accommodates different regions and international alliances with varied stay durations:

  • East African Community (EAC) Member States: Citizens of EAC member countries receive a free entry pass/visa valid for six months upon arrival.
  • 90-Day Free Visa List: Citizens of select countries, including Angola, Benin, Ghana, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, and Qatar, are granted a 90-day visa free of charge upon arrival.
  • Other Countries: Citizens of all other countries not exempted from visa fees can still obtain a visa upon arrival but will be charged a fee.

Required Documents for Entry

Even though a prior application is not required, travellers heading to Rwanda are expected to present:

  • An international passport with at least six months of validity.
  • A return or onward ticket.
  • Proof of accommodation or an invitation letter.
  • Yellow Fever vaccination certificate (depending on the country of departure).

Impact on African Travel and Tourism

Rwanda's visa-on-arrival policy for all nations is a significant step toward promoting intra-African travel and tourism. By waiving fees for AU members, the country encourages greater mobility and economic integration within the continent. This policy aligns with the African Union's Agenda 2063 goal of a borderless Africa.

Nigeria, as Africa's most populous nation, stands to benefit immensely from this arrangement. The free entry facilitates easier business exchanges, cultural visits, and tourism between the two countries.
