Former Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has issued a compelling call for surveyors across Nigeria to elevate their professional conduct and commit to delivering superior quality services. He made this appeal while addressing key stakeholders at a major industry gathering in Lagos.
A Clarion Call for Professional Excellence
The event was the 40th Annual General Meeting Luncheon and Investiture of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Lagos State branch, held on Wednesday, December 17, 2025. The theme of the meeting was 'Leadership and Professionalism'.
In his keynote address, Fashola drew a direct connection between effective leadership, professional integrity, and national progress. He argued that the distinction between developed and developing nations is mirrored in the professionalism of their workforce and the quality of leadership.
"Leadership and professionalism are connected. Service is what lies at the heart of leadership," Fashola stated. "The difference between professional and unprofessional behaviours is the same difference that enables nations to be categorized as developed and developing."
He challenged the institution and its members to refuse complacency, emphasising that raising standards and ensuring quality performance are non-negotiable for national development. "As an institution, you should not settle for less; in that way we can raise standards. We should render quality service for national development," he urged.
NIS Leadership Echoes the Mandate for Standards
The national leadership of the NIS strongly supported Fashola's message. The President of the institution, Surveyor Pius Eze, represented by the Deputy President, Kunle Ogungbadewa, commended the Lagos State branch for being a beacon for the national body.
He highlighted the critical timing of the meeting's theme, noting leadership as a pivotal challenge. The president charged the newly inaugurated executive to drive innovation and champion professionalism, stressing the need for surveyors to stay current with technological advancements. "Our profession demands we remain abreast of the use of technology," he remarked.
Safeguarding the Future of the Profession
The outgoing chairman of the NIS Lagos branch, Surveyor Olukolade Kasim, provided a crucial perspective on maintaining standards amidst growth. While optimistic about the influx of young professionals, he warned against sacrificing quality for quantity.
"The future of our profession is indeed bright and promising with young and vibrant minds joining our ranks. However, we must proceed with caution as quality must always take precedence over quantity," Kasim advised.
He pointed out that easier access to modern surveying instruments necessitates stronger safeguards for professional standards. Kasim also underscored the vital role of mentorship, calling on senior colleagues to lead by example and guide the next generation.
Adding to the discourse, the Special Adviser on Survey Matters to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Surveyor Ayokunnu Adesina, described the synergy between leadership and professionalism as essential. He concluded that "When leadership outgrows professionalism, a perfect match will emerge," encapsulating the event's core message.
The collective charge from leaders at the event presents a clear roadmap for the surveying profession in Nigeria: to fortify its ethical foundations, embrace innovation, and deliver impeccable service as a cornerstone for the nation's development.
