Saudi Arabia eVisa: 3 African Countries Eligible for 12-Month Visa

Saudi Arabia has expanded its electronic visa system to include citizens from 66 countries, with three African nations now eligible for the online travel authorization. The initiative aims to boost tourism by simplifying entry procedures for international visitors.

Key Features of the New eVisa

The newly introduced electronic visa is a multiple-entry document valid for twelve months. Holders can stay in the kingdom for a maximum of 90 days per visit. The scheme permits leisure travel, attendance at public events, family visits, and performance of Umrah. However, regular Hajj activities and academic studies remain strictly excluded.

African Countries Eligible for the eVisa

The updated immigration framework includes specific passport holders from the African continent. Citizens from these designated regions can now bypass traditional embassy channels by using the web platform before their departure. The three eligible African countries are Mauritius, Seychelles, and South Africa. Notably, Nigeria, the most populous nation in Africa, is not on the list.

Broader Context: Visa Policies in the Region

This move is part of a broader trend in the Middle East and Asia to liberalize visa policies. For instance, the United Arab Emirates offers visa-free entry to citizens of about 70 countries, leveraging its extensive air links and busy airports like Dubai International Airport. Similarly, South Korea has updated its entry frameworks, granting visa-free stays of up to 180 days for Canadian citizens, 90 days for most European nations, the United States, Australia, and select Asian countries, and 30 days for travelers from certain Middle Eastern and Oceanian nations.

China has also released an updated list of visa-exempted countries under its unilateral visa exemption policies, allowing qualifying passport holders to enter mainland China without a visa for short-term stays. This is part of Beijing's effort to revitalize international tourism and ease global business travel.
