In a heartwarming display of festive spirit and cross-cultural friendship, the Chinese community in Lagos brought joy to approximately 2,000 Nigerian children this Christmas season. The event, held on December 23, 2025, was organized by the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Lagos, alongside the Chinese Industrial and Commercial Enterprises Association and the Association of Chinese Women in Nigeria.
A Festive Gathering for Future Ambassadors
The celebration was specifically designed for children from low-income families, transforming the venue into a playground of happiness. The space featured bouncing castles and numerous games, creating an atmosphere of pure delight for the young attendees. The cultural dimension was vividly brought to life by the HuaXing Arts Troupe Nigeria, which performed traditional Chinese dances including the energetic Lion Dance, the majestic Dragon Dance, and the elegant Fan Dance.
Addressing the gathering, the Consul General of China in Lagos, Ms. Yan Yuqing, emphasized that this celebration has become a cherished tradition. She noted that it serves to bridge the geographical distance between the two nations during the festive season. Ms. Yuqing seized the moment to encourage the children, urging them to view education as a critical pathway to their future. She advised them to study diligently and aspire to careers in diverse fields such as teaching, science, and diplomacy.
"Learn about China, its history and culture, and see yourselves as future ambassadors of China–Nigeria friendship," the Consul General told the captivated young audience.
Beyond Celebration: A Commitment to Humanitarian Support
The event was more than just a party; it highlighted the ongoing humanitarian work of the Chinese community in Nigeria. Ms. Yuqing detailed key initiatives, including the "Together Fight Against Hunger" Charity Programme, which has provided food to over 1,000 people from vulnerable households, focusing on women and children. Another significant project, the "Renewed Hope, Rebirth from the Light" initiative, has successfully restored sight to more than 400 individuals suffering from cataracts. The Consul General affirmed that such programmes would continue.
The commitment to education was given tangible form during the event. In line with their annual tradition, 20 students and schools were awarded scholarships and cultural ambassadorships. Additionally, food items were distributed to 80 students from low-income families through the "Together Fight Against Hunger" programme.
Building Bridges Through Education and Culture
Other speakers echoed the sentiment of goodwill and investment in the future. The Executive Director of Lagride Nigeria Limited, Adeniyi Saliu, commended the Chinese community and the Consulate for their steadfast dedication to fostering bilateral relations. He reminded the children that the greatest gift they could give themselves was a quality education.
"The dedication you show in your studies today will open doors you cannot yet imagine tomorrow," Saliu stated.
Dr. Eric Ni, Chairman of the HuaXing Arts Troupe Nigeria, reinforced the community's focus on supporting education and cultural exchange. "As we celebrate the children at Christmas, let us remember that they need to get all that they deserve, because the future of this country and the world falls on them," Dr. Ni said. He clarified that the scholarship awards are a core part of their efforts to give back to the Nigerian communities that host them.
The celebration successfully blended festive joy with meaningful social investment, showcasing a model of community engagement that strengthens the enduring bonds between the peoples of Nigeria and China.
